Celebrated since the 1970s, Autism Awareness Month was introduced to drive research and promote understanding. Today, we need more than that. While research must continue at full speed, we also need to make meaningful progress toward acceptance and inclusion.

There’s a common saying: if you’ve met one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism. Every autistic individual has unique strengths, challenges, and characteristics. So inclusion will mean recognizing individual differences in communication, social interaction, and sensory experiences to make thoughtful, practical changes to integrate autistic individuals to the best of their abilities.

The biggest shift does not need to be about more formal accommodations alone, but rather from making everyday social interactions welcoming. Inclusion in the community grows when peers are taught understanding and empathy from an early age, so differences in communication or behavior are not seen as barriers.

Simple actions can go a long way— encouraging kids to invite classmates who might otherwise be left out, organizing smaller or sensory-friendly social gatherings, and having adults gently facilitate interactions so everyone feels comfortable joining in. Ensuring that every autistic child is part of a sport activity that works best for them also needs to be seriously considered, even though it may be a long road of trials and errors until parents and professionals find the best sports activity for that person. At the end of the day, when families, schools, and communities actively model inclusion from an early age and not leave it up to chance, autistic individuals are far more likely to be included at lunch tables, birthday parties, and everyday social moments that build real connection.

So progress on the scientific research end, needs to be matched by progress on inclusion. And it starts with a simple understanding of the diverse perspectives within the autism community and accepting that it is also part of normal.

At Emona, we believe supporting the autistic community means empowering individuals with personalized resources. This is why we founded Emona. We started out by enabling the quick, easy, and trusted creation of social stories with AI that can be tailored to an individual's needs and challenges. With a simple prompt that includes all the relevant details– from appearance to a present situation, we gave a quick and practical way for parents, teachers, and educators to support emotions, feelings, and behaviors.

We recently included new product capabilities, namely the ability to create visual schedules and step-by-step guides that can be made specific and descriptive to match the needs of that one person with autism. All those resources can help navigate changes in routines, new experiences, transitional moments, and so much more.

The personalized, AI-powered social stories, visual schedules, and step-by-step guides are created in under a minute, available in over 10+ languages, with edit capabilities, easy sharing, export to Google slides, and voice-over support. So use Emona to spend less time preparing and more time promoting inclusion!
